In 2009, a small group of Dutch biologists rounded up some lab mice, stabbed them with needles, and harvested their blood. Mice raised at five different animal facilities in Europe, under otherwise identical conditions , have “persistent differences in body weight” and behavior. Each animal had a different microbiome.
