Cancer cells make too much survivin, with levels increasing as the disease spreads and becomes more aggressive. It delayed disease progression and more than doubled survival time, adding 17 months. I had the privilege to meet one of the first people to receive Gleevec, which I wrote about for Bioethics Today in 2006.
